MOVEON vs glucosamine: which joint parts each covers, the research, and taking both

Reviewed by Health Advisor Team

Short answer: Glucosamine gives cartilage building material, and that does help, but cartilage is only one of a joint's five parts. MOVEON takes a different approach: UC-II® first helps the immune system stop attacking joint collagen, Ovomet® supplies material for cartilage, joint fluid, tendons and ligaments (and naturally contains glucosamine and chondroitin), BonePep™ and vitamin D3 look after the bone, and 500mg of turmeric supports the inflammatory environment. It isn't a better glucosamine. It covers the parts glucosamine was never designed to reach.

What does glucosamine actually do, and why do people stall?

Glucosamine supplies raw material for cartilage, so the early improvement many people feel is real. The catch is that supply can't outpace breakdown that is still going on. It's like patching a wall while someone else keeps chipping at it: the wall struggles to get thicker.

And a joint is more than cartilage. If the joint fluid, tendons and ligaments, the bone underneath and the inflammatory environment are left alone, they slowly pull the gains back. Plenty of people get about a third of the way better, stop there, and decide their joint has hit its limit. In fact only one part out of five was ever being looked after.

What extra step does UC-II® take?

UC-II® works further upstream. It keeps collagen in its original shape, and at 40mg a day it acts on the immune tissue in your gut, a process called oral tolerization. In everyday terms, it tells your immune system the collagen in your joints is your own. With less breakdown, the material you supply has a chance to stay put. Glucosamine skips this step entirely.

What does the research say?

The product page cites Lugo 2016 (Nutrition Journal), a randomised trial of 191 people over 180 days comparing 40mg of UC-II® with 2,700mg of glucosamine plus chondroitin.

  • WOMAC joint score: down 39.4% on UC-II®, against 32.5% on glucosamine with chondroitin. WOMAC is a questionnaire widely used in joint research; a lower score means less pain, stiffness and difficulty moving.
  • Against placebo: glucosamine with chondroitin did not clearly beat placebo, while UC-II® had pulled clearly ahead by day 90.
  • Painkillers: 17.5% of the UC-II® group needed a painkiller at least once, compared with 48.3% on placebo.

This is research on the UC-II® ingredient, not a trial of MOVEON itself, and it doesn't mean you'll get the same result.

I already take glucosamine. Should I switch, or take both?

Taking both is usually fine. MOVEON already contains natural glucosamine and chondroitin, so many customers finish the tub they have and don't buy another. If you take prescription medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

Why does MOVEON cost more than glucosamine?

UC-II®, Ovomet® and BonePep™ are patented ingredients, the same ones used in the human trials, and they cost several times what bulk glucosamine does. For whether that's worth it to you, read is MOVEON worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't glucosamine plus collagen powder the same thing?

No. Hydrolysed collagen is broken down into amino acids in the gut and often goes to skin and nails. Even combined, the two still miss UC-II®'s immune step and BonePep™'s bone support.

What about turmeric capsules?

Turmeric supports the inflammatory pathway, but the studies used 500mg and a typical capsule holds 100–200mg. One MOVEON sachet has 500mg.

I've taken glucosamine for years. Is it worth changing now?

We can't promise a result. Many people come to MOVEON precisely because glucosamine only got them partway. Run a proper course and let the 30-day money-back guarantee carry the risk while you decide.

Can I take MOVEON if I'm allergic to egg?

No. Ovomet® comes from eggshell membrane and BonePep™ from egg yolk.
